NFC - Near Field Communication

NFC is an international communications standard developed since 2002, allowing different chip types to communicate with each other. Communication distances are less than 10 cm, which means that the user must place his mobile phone in front of a tag to obtain the information or the service required.

The French are quite familiar with NFC technologies, as they already use “contactless” cards used in a wide number of areas of business. However, NFC chips will soon be integrated into mobile phones in France. This development will trigger a number of changes for service providers such as local authorities and businesses, users will also be affected.

Today, the mobile telephone can be used in much the same way as a real computer; it has keyboard, a screen and a network connection. What is especially important is that it is commonly used object, 89 % of French people own one, and are willing to return home to pick it up if they forget it.

NFC on a mobile phone, is a triple (R)evolution:

1. It provides access to services, and the ability to read local or distant information via internet, requiring only the simplest of actions.
2. It is possible to carry out secure purchases using a mobile phone.
3. It triggers the creation of many other services alongside those that already exist.
